Garden Glossary
Annuals: Plants or flowers that last one season. As opposed to perennials. And weeds.
Anvil Blade: Offers efficient cutting action. For dry, hard, old growth.
Bulb: Resting stage of a plant. Except for onions. Those you eat.
Bypass Blade: Used for precise, clean flush cuts. Ideal for new green growth.
Chopping Axe: Axe used for cutting and chopping tree limbs or kindling in cross-section. But if you have splitting to do, spring for a splitting axe.
Comfort Grip®: Cushioned grip for better comfort and control. Lots fewer blisters, too.
Container Gardening: Gardening in pots or other containers rather than planting in the soil. Almost anything can be used - redwood planters, ceramic urns, late-model used cars.
Cultivator: Tined tool that pulls through dirt to work and aerate the soil. A manual cultivator gives you a sense of what a pioneer in the Plains States wished he had.
Ergonomics: The science of comfort and design. In other words, Fiskars has comfort and design down to a science.
Lopper: Tools to cut medium-size branches too large for hand pruners but too small for a saw.
Nyglass®: Reinforced nylon material engineered for strength and low weight used in products like the Pruning Stik®. You say you like bulky and awkward? Find another brand.
PowerGear® technology: Unique patented gear design that maximizes leverage to reduce your cutting effort.
Power-Lever® technology: Patented compound lever action design that reduces your cutting effort.
PowerTooth™ technology: Unique variable tooth design multiplies muscle power to let you cut cleaner and faster on the pull stroke.
Pruner: Tool for light pruning of woody stems, or to shape and maintain plants.
Pruning: Cutting away dead, diseased parts of plants. Also cutting to control size and balance. Also cutting to appease the neighbors.
Universal Cutter: Patented lightweight, dual action, ropeless tree pruner.
Softouch®: Patented ergonomic handle design for maximum comfort.
Splitting Axe: Axe with wedge-shaped blade to split logs and wood longitudinally.
Transplanter: Narrow trowel with measurements in the head for easy planting and transplanting. Works better in flower beds than in operating rooms.
